Running a big theme can slow your phone also
Maybe if it's an image over 5mb. . You need to check each APP running.
Turn off blue tooth and WIFI if not needed.

The hour glass means low memory! Get a memory card for your media
You possibly have too many open Apps running in the background.
Menu > Menu > switch applications. if there are more than 5 Apps running, then you'll need to do a Battery pull to close out some of those Apps.
